Hello there! I am a freelance web publisher so basically I work from home using my laptop. My husband and I just bought our first home. The other day I was shopping around for home insurance when an agent told me if I run my home business many carriers will mark me as “not eligible” for home insurance. Is this true? How do I get around that? What’s the best home insurance company?

Here you can get quotes from different home insurance companies in your area, its the best way to find an affordable home insurance with a reliable company.

True, but it depends on the exact type of business.

I’d think, with no foot traffic, and no business property exposure except a laptop, and no manufacturing going on, most homeowners carriers won’t have a problem – If you carry business liability insurance.

Even if you don’t want to carry insurance for the business, you’ll still likely be able to find an insurer willing to cover the homeowners part (none will cover the business part), you’ll just have to look a little harder. Use an independent agent, and they’ll be able to take care of you.

    Work At Home Opportunities

That was a very strange remark — especially from an insurance agent. You can insure your home, and you can also insure your business. If you use one room of your home for business, you must dedicate that room to the business and only the business. A good agent will not make unsubstantiated claims, but will instead guide you towards the best plan to suit all of your needs — home and business.

We shopped around for our homeowners insurance and business insurance. At present each is with different carriers, even different agents. But next year we plan to insure our business, home and car with one agent. Sometimes insurers can receive discounts for multiple policies under one agent.

Call around, shop around … sometimes agents who work for Farmers, State Farm, Allstate, etc. (the big names) can provide policies with the best coverage at a lower rate than the advertised cheaper companies. Every family and every business have their own set of requirements, and only an experienced and compassionate agent can find the best policies to cover each.

    Best wishes.
